Revised monthly expenses

January 4th, 2007 at 04:23 pm

I went over the list of expenses I posted on December 30th and with my man person's help, I revised it. He brought a couple of things to my attention so here's the revised list of expenses.

Mortgage $270
Food 200
Electricity 200
Water 55
Propane 20
Property tax 55
Gasoline 200
Phone 54
Cell Phone 50
Satellite 55
ISP 92
Netflix 20
Toner 40
Paper 45
Clothes 20
Household 25
Medical 100
Auto Maint. 60

Total $1,561.00

The medical isn't accurate because we're both diabetic and need to test very often. If we test as we need to, the monthly cost of that would be closer to $400. Ouch!

Anyway, that's the breakdown of monthly expenses. Now I just have to figure out how to get that much coming in consistently...

Why is electricity so high? Is that an average, taking in to account that in the hot weather, air conditioning will make your bill higher?
I know it gets hot in Texas.
I also know the phone bills can be high there. (We sold our house in South Texas a year ago) Do you use your land line for long distance calls? If so, get a cell plan with unlimited weekend minutes, and make those calls on weekends. T Mobile has a plan is $29.99 a month, for 300 anytime minutes, and unlimited weekends. Just don't go over the 300 minutes!
Can you lower the satellite cost to basic reception. If the boys want movie channels, let them pay for them.
You are doing fantastically well on the food budget, considering you are feeding four guys!
Can you drop Netflix, or lower the cost to one movie at a time?
You are also doing great on your clothing budget. Garage sales and Goodwill are great places to get nice, inexpensive clothing.
Can you bring in a little money by watching a child or two in your home, or get one or two housecleaning jobs, at least until you get your bills caught up?
Over all, it sounds like you are doing a great job.

Actually, our electric bill is always ridiculously high and we aren't sure why. In the summer it's close to $300. In the winter it's about the same, sometimes higher, sometimes lower. Our last one was $140, one of the lowest ones we've had in ages but we didn't use the AC and used the heater only 3 or 4 days that month.

We use the land line for long distance. We have unlimited LD on it.

We can lower the satellite to the basic but I think we might just cancel it. I've thought of going to the 1 movie option on Netflix but am not sure what we'll do yet. I need to talk to DH about this and I tried this morning and he wasn't too interested. I'll try again later.

We live outside the city and there are no kids around here and no one will bring their kids here, trust me. It's just not "convenient".

I'm still thinking of ways to cut back and bring in more money.

    Thanks for your suggestions!

I budget $200 a month for electrity too. Right now it runs a little less than $100 a month, but in the summer it averages $200 or more. So, it all evens out in the end.

My son was complaining about his electric bill for some time. I had a chance to be up there when they had the baby. What I observed is that the computer stays on all the time. There is a nice article on electricity on this website. What most people don't know is how expensive monitors being on are. That's one of the reasons why your screen saver comes on. Also, I couldn't believe how many lights they left burning all the time day and night. Some were outside lights (obsviously not on a timer). I haven't said anything to him yet, but I will eventually look for that article about the computers for him. Just start observing how many lights are burning and how long the TV stays on not being watched.

Aleta, we have several computers that are on most of the time but DH insists they use very little power. I can't convince him otherwise but am trying! I turn my monitor off when I'm not using it but that doesn't seem to help much. You said there's a nice article on electricity on "this site". By "this site" you mean savingadvice.com? I'll see if I can find it. I turn off lights and tvs when they're not in use. I've done that for many, many years. Thanks!
