Brrr! Bad weather coming - what's your favorite cold weather food?

January 4th, 2010 at 04:37 am

Some bad (for this area) weather is being predicted for later this week. Apparently we're going to have lows between 15 and 20 for a couple of days and the chance of light snow Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Brrr! I don't like that at all, especially when I'm trying to keep the thermostat set at 70! If I could just get the man person to wear his thermals we might be able to save a little on heating.

Weather like what is coming means comfort food is necessary so tonight when I made our menu for the week to post on my cooking blog I figured in some things like stuffed mushrooms and baked cabbage. Both are things that are so very good when the weather is very cold. And they're easy and not expensive at all.

What's your favorite cold weather food and do you have a recipe for it? I'm looking for some new things to try and it would be great if y'all would share with me!

last winter i made it a resolution to have a lot more soups - for two reasons: they are easy to make, and if they don't have cream in them, are mostly healthy for you (and help you avoid stacking on winter kilograms!).

So, my favourite winter dishes are:
spicy pumpkin, sweet potato & lentil soup.
potato & leek soup (i make it without cream)
    minestroni soup.
miso, tofu & vegetable soup with somen noodle.

Something warm and creamy, homemade mac and cheese, potato soup, chicken soup with homemade noodles, salisbury steak, liver and onions, and favorite cooking helper, CROCKPOT. A few minutes prep in the AM, and it cooks while I sleep (night shifter), and WaLa, supper is almost ready when I get up. Who could ask for more!

I would have to say soups and stews. I have very good recipes for a beef stew using tea and paprika and a salmon/corn chowder soup that's delic.

Mmm, yeah, most of the above! Plus roasted butternut-squash soup with a (vegetarian) spicy chicken patty on the side to cut the sweetness. Grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup. Hot mulled wine or cider.

Pot roast. And lately I've been experimenting with adding kimchi to the pot roast as it cooks. Warm Pot roast next to spicy, but cold kimchi as a banchan (Korean side) is great too. Anything spicy is great when its cold out also.
