Chicken thighs and motivation - a strange sort of process

December 11th, 2011 at 06:29 pm

I'm stressing a little because it's December 11th and I have no financial goals in mind for the coming year. Or the month. Or even the week! I feel so stuck right now as far as finances go and I really need to get motivated.

This might sound odd but two ways I find motivation are making my menu plan for the week and cooking. Yeah, I said making a menu plan and cooking. Both of those activities remind me that I need to use what I have on hand. And that leads to a reminder that I don't need to go to the grocery store for things I don't have on hand. And that leads to a reminder that I don't need to go out and willy nilly spend, though I really don't do that, anyway. And that leads to a reminder that I need to find ways to cut back on this or that to help me save more. And that, eventually, leads me to coming up with ways to do that. Voila, I'm motivated. Wink It's a strange sort of process but it generally works for me.

In light of that, I'm about to work on this week's menu and I'm pondering just what to do with the chicken thighs in my fridge.

So tell me - how do YOU get and stay motivated to stay on track and save?

I get motivated from reading the blogs here. I get motivated from growing my emergency fund and watching pennies turn into dollars. I make it a game, really, and every coin and every dollar bill I receive in change goes toward it. I get motivated by keeping my grocery spending under budget and yes, meal planning. I am currently trying to make do with what is in the freezer and pantry as much as possible so I can bank those grocery dollars. I especially get motivated by watching my debt total going down each month.

Thanks, Robin! I really have to find more motivation. It used to be easy and now it's much more difficult and I'm not sure why. I appreciate your answer. Smile

I was thinking about this some more and one of the things that really got me motivated again in January was reading Jeffrey's Eating Well on $1 a Day experiment he did on his blog. Although I'd never be able to do what he did, I did find that reading through what he went through helped me to encourage myself. Sort of an if he could do that than I can certainly do this kind of thing. It's definitely a little nuts, but it is so entertaining and it really is inspirational and motivational. Maybe it could help you jump start yourself like it did for me.

You know, I read some of that awhile back and was really impressed. Unfortunately, my diet is pretty danged limited and I rarely find coupons for what I eat. However, I'll keep reading that because yeah, if he can do that I can do something better than what I'm doing now. Smile Thanks!

Yes, I know what you mean. My diet is limited, too, due to allergies. As we rarely eat manufactured foods, and those from a very limited list, it's rare to find coupons I can even consider using. But it's kind of like reading the Tightwad Gazette. I know that 1/2 of it will probably never apply to my life, but that other 1/2 is worth it. Plus it's fun.

I'm all for fun and saving money so I'll keep reading and implement what I can. Smile
