Dave Ramsey - do his ideas work?

January 4th, 2007 at 11:57 pm

I've been listening to Dave's radio show archives all afternoon and I think I'm finally beginning to understand his system. Do any of you use his baby steps and have they worked or are they currently working for you?

Almost every caller has what I consider a large income and job benefits - so far none of them are like us, living at or below the poverty level, not insured, barely getting by, etc. so I'm not sure how well his suggestions would work for us but I'm very willing to give them a try.

DH isn't quite on board with all this yet. I've mentioned things to him but as of yet, he hasn't commented. I might have to do most of this on my own but if I have to, I will.

Keep listening to him. Lots of people who call him have horrible debt, and don' t make much money.
His ideas really do work. You might check the library for his books too.
The Complete Money Makeover is probably the most common one.

Also, if you haven't read Amy Dacyczyn's "Complete Tightwad Gazette", get it from the library and read it. It is a little dated, but has tons of ideas that have helped me. Also, they were low income and had a lot of kids when they instituted thier plan.
Hang in there. You will find ideas that will help you. It sounds like you have a lot of good ideas yourself, too, especially re. food prep.

Many years ago I found my household in terrible straights as no bills had been paid. We had lots of kiddies and the same for bills.
The envelope system was our salvation, plus writing letters to creditors explaining all would be paid little by little. It was either be mad at the world or call it a game to come up holding my head high. My head is as high as 5'2 can be and I have a comfortable
level of income for now. I still play the game as it's fun. Dave Ramsey is a take on the system and it will work no matter your
    circumstances. Keep heart!

I have the tightwad gazette and love it! Some of her ideas are a bit too extreme for me but most are just fine and I've put a lot of them to good use. I'm going to see about getting some of Dave's books from the library and in the meantime have been haunting some of the forums about debt and Dave and other systems. It's helpful, I think!

I'm not a loyalist by any stretch of the imagination, but Dave Ramsey is what I would consider as a solid starting point.

Later on, I think you'll want to be aware of some of the shortcomings of his system, but if you're just starting out and drowning in debt, Dave Ramsey's system can and will help you survive.

Yeah! I not only read Dave's book(Financial Peace is my favorite), but I also took his Financial Peace University course at my church. I think he's got great ideas. However, I do agree with you...it seems like most of his call in's have a lot bigger budget to work with than I do. There's no way I can save for all 3 of my kid's college, make millions for retirement, donate tons of money to a good cause. But, his principles make sense! I CAN live within our own budget. I can avoid debt. I can make wise financial choices..all without making 3 figures.

I know one person who goes on and on and on she is paying all her debts and saving thousands a month (like $3k/month!!!). Thanks to Dave Ramsey! Oh dear - I have no debts because I don't have $3k/month for credit card and auto loans - LOL.

It just boggles my mind that someone with so much money would pay so much with debt in the first place. Still wrapping my brain around it. I think overall Dave Ramsey is a good start, even for people with less. But this person goes on and on about Dave Ramsey cluelessly to those making $30k/year like they really can save that much. I think his impact is bigger with the upper-middle-class. But he can make an impact with anyone. It just might take longer for some people. Overall I like his ideas. Just some of his followers are a little clueless. Good Luck!

Thanks for the input on Dave. I've driven my other half out of the bedroom listening to the man. He finally went into the living room to watch television. Wink He still hasn't said anything but he listened for quite awhile... I appreciate your input!

The neat thing about Dave Ramsey is that he's also a "Man's Man", and that's someone men in general can relate to... once they become interested in the subject matter. Big Grin

A man's man, huh? My DH might be more inclined to pay attention to him because of that. lol
