Buttery Breadsticks

I got this recipe from hillbillyhousewife.com and they're so easy and so tasty! We like them with parmesan cheese sprinkled on them.

1/2 cup margarine (I use less)
2 cups flour (whole wheat works well)
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup milk (approximately)

Place the margarine in a 9 by 13 rectangular pan. Put this into the oven at 425° and melt the margarine. When margarine is melted, remove the pan and set aside. In a mixing bowl combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Using a fork to stir, gradually mix in the milk. You might need a bit more milk. Stir the dough until it forms a soft ball. Coat the ball with flour if it seems sticky. Pat or roll the dough out on top of waxed paper. You should make a roughly rectangular shape which will fit into the hot pan.

Gently place the large sheet of dough into the pan, on top of the hot margarine. Use a pizza cutter or a sharp knife to cut the dough into thin strips. The margarine will ooze up between the sticks. If desired, you may sprinkle the bread sticks with parmesan cheese, garlic, salt, etc. at this time or you can put the seasoning into the butter before adding the dough.

Bake the bread sticks at 425° for about 15 to 20 minutes. They will bake up golden brown, crunchy on the outside and soft in the center.

Cinnamon Dips: Combine 1/4-cup of sugar, and 1 tsp cinnamon. Sprinkle this liberally about the bread sticks right before baking. This makes a very nice and quick treat for the kids right after school.

Sure thing, Robin. I love these things. I haven't made them as a dessert type thing with sugar but I imagine they would be very good made with honey and some cinnamon. Yummm!

I use this recipe, too! I have done them up as an afternoon snack for the kids and put sugar and cinnamon on them...yummy either way.

I have made these too. Hillbilly Housewife's website is down. I miss it.
I have gotten some great recipes from her site. Her oatmeal bread recipe is a staple in this house.

Her website is up. She was working on it for a bit but it's up and running.

Thanks for letting me know her website is up and running. I had it bookmarked, and used to visit the site regularly, and recently, when I clicked on it, it showed the site was not functioning. I just googled it, and read her latest entry. I have l notebook full of her recipes. I especially like her substitutes for hamburger helper, and rice-a-roni type convenience foods. I make several at a time, and used them when I am at a loss for what to make for dinner. I make a good, inexpensive meal using her chicken rice-a-roni mix a 15 oz. can of tomato sauce, some browned hamburger, and 2/1/2 cups of water. You simmer it for about 20 minutes. We call it "roni". You can also make it using the store bought rice-a-roni, but I actually like the homemade mix better.

These sound great Smile I am going to try them sometime soon. I am trying to learn to cook more. We eat out all the time but we are trying to limit it to once a week.

Autumn, I love to cook and it's one of the things I do well at, if I do say so myself! Wink It really does help save a lot of money if you cook and eat at home.
