Auto insurance opinions needed

January 3rd, 2012 at 05:09 pm

I currently use Geico for auto insurance. My policy renews this month at $770.40 for 6 months. I can get the same coverage with Progressive for $323.00. Wow, that's a huge difference and it might seem like a no brainer but I don't know much about Progressive.

Do any of you use it and what are your thoughts on it?

    Don't use it, but
Text is here's a chart and Link is http://www.jdpower.com/autos/ratings/auto-insurance-provider-ratings/
here's a chart showing rankings of auto insurance companies.

If you have any military association, I would highly recommend USAA.

Hmm, it's hard to make heads or tails of that but I'll look over it well this evening when I get in. My first husband was military and uses USAA but I have no affiliation with the military so that's not an option. My sister has been going through a nightmare with USAA for about 12 weeks now, believe it or not. They flat out told her that the issues she's having with a contractor THEY recommended aren't their problem and have pretty much abandoned her to deal with it. I recall USAA being awesome but perhaps they're not so much anymore.

That is too bad that your sister is having problems. I'm sure there are issues with every company. Good luck making a decision!

Do both quotes assume using an "investment bureau credit score"? Do both quotes assume "multiple policy discounts"? Is this for a newish car?

I ask as I resisted buying a policy with an "investment bureau credit score", but somehow maybe because I didn't ask when I switched home insurance to GEICO I got a discount. Also my insurance (GEICO) is about a third of what you quote for yours, but I have a geriatric, soon-to-the-scrap-yard vehicle. If GEICO gives me a similar quote to yours for when I buy my replacement vehicle, I'd be shopping around.

Pennywise, I worked in the auto insurance industry before retiring, and can assure you both Progressive and GEICO are highly rated and reputable companies.

The hugh discrepancy in price may indicate you were not quoted the same coverage levels, or that there is a difference in the financial score being applied if you live in a state that allows credit scoring (most do, with the exception of California and one or two others.)

If possible, put the Progressive quote next to the GEICO quote and compare all coverages to see if they are the same.

In addition, you might want to contact GEICO and explain your new quote. They should be able to explain any differences to you, and will probably appreciate you giving them a chance to retain your business.

Wow, that is high. My insurance is less than half of that and I drive a 2010 corvette. I use state farm. We do get s discount cause we have 5 cars with them.

    I agree with ERJ.

If the two policies match up pretty evenly, I would definitely call Geico and let them know. That is a very large differential. (I've had Geico Auto for over 12 years .. very happy with them.)

Paulette, I don't have a clue if they use those. The car is a 2002 mini van and the renewal quote is way out of range. I guess I'll call them and see what's going on with that.

EarlyRetirementJoy, the quotes are for the exact same amounts of coverage. I just don't get why the one I'm already with would be more than twice the other one.

    Thanks, y'all!
